Red Cross Emergency Overnight Shelter is now the Rockford Rescue Mission's Women Crisis Center

The Rock River Chapter of the American Red Cross has finalized plans to transfer operations of the emergency shelter located at 809 Cedar Street to the Rockford Rescue Mission. In order to maintain the traditional core services and programs of the American Red Cross, the Rock River Chapter sought a strong partnership to ensure that area homeless women and children could be adequately supported.

“We are very pleased with this transition for two reasons,” shares Dr. Robert Willis.” First, is that we were able to partner with such an excellent organization as the Rockford Rescue Mission. Second, is that an ever increasing population of homeless citizens will continue to receive quality shelter and support.”

In 1987, the Mayor’s Task Force on the Homeless identified the need for an emergency, non-discriminatory shelter in Rockford for women, children and men. The Rock River Chapter agreed to provide this vital service to the community. After 20 years serving the community, the Rock River Chapter provided over 253,641 nights of lodging to 12,195 people.

The mission of the American Red Cross is to help people to prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies. In light of an onslaught of disasters over the past couple years coupled with a rough economic terrain, the Red Cross is returning to the core purpose. “The Rock River Chapter is here to empower everyday individuals with vital information and training which may in turn save a life,” shares Willis. “Ultimately, we serve as the link between need and getting help, and we’re primed for a return to that core mission.”
